Talented trio enter Rome Bowling Association Hall of Fame
Approximately 200 people packed the downstairs of the Beeches Saturday night to honor a talented trio of bowlers in the 32nd annual Rome Bowling Associational Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Frank Reno, Buster Maurer and Tom Hluska were the 2007 inductees. All three were given plaques and gave speeches as 2004 inductee Jim Korpela emceed the event.
Reno, who is an United States Bowling Congress Level 1 coach and continues to help the youth bowlers on Saturday mornings at King Pin Lanes, was first to the stage as his young son looked on.
"My biggest thing is with the kids," Reno said. "They are the future of bowling. I love to see the kids do good."
Maurer, who was the national championship crew chief mechanic to modified legend Richie Evans, was next up.
"Richie Evans instilled a never give up attitude and to be a gracious winner," Maurer added.
Hluska, who had by far the most family in attendance that Korpela joked 'welcome to the Hluska family reunion,' was emotional in giving his speech. He thanked a number of people including his late father, who got him started bowling, and his wife Susan, who he met bowling. He has worked in the bowling business for almost 30 years.
The night began with Hluska's daughter Evelyn and Carl Seifert, both Rome Free Academy seniors, receiving scholarship awards from the RBA.
The night ended with Mayor James Brown saying a few words.
"Bowling has really been an intricate part of our community for many years," Brown said. "Bowling is a key element of our community. Why we're moving forward is organizations like you."
