For which it stands...

When Americans "pledge allegiance to the flag if the United States of America" we always add "and to the republic for which it stands". Members of Congress will likely vote this week on a flag protection amendment that forces a choice: protect the flag or protect the republic for which it stands.

The illustration to the right might be the corner of an apparently desecrated American flag. Or it might be the corner of a pattern that was never a complete American flag but similarly designed with a singed corner. Does it represent desecration or political statement?

Radio news reports from Pakistan indicate three Christians are in prison for blasphemy against the Moslem prophet Mohammed. There is not much difference. With this amendment we?re headed that way. When you start down the slippery slope of deciding what is offensive you may find the devil turn around on you and no place to turn for refuge. Oppression is corrosive. It destroys from the inside.

Propose laws to better protect the flag and the republic for which it stands: For every reported desecration, ask community members to fly their own flags seven days in support. Ask citizens to leave a bouquet of flowers at the site in celebration that all the other flags in the country stand taller for the single flag lost in protest. Urge public denouncement of the desecration. Turn the desecration in to a celebration of freedom. Wave a whole community of other flags. Toss bouquets for freedom.

During the Flag amendment discussion and vote you will hear posturing from people who either cannot see the value of the republic for which our flag stands or who choose not to see it for their own reasons. When such indignant protestations erupt, hold on to your freedoms as tightly as you hold on to your wallet during television infomercials. Ask yourself, why the posturing? Ask yourself why these people are so willing to undermine the republic for which it stands.
