The problem of immigration
The problem of immigration isn't 'a' single problem and it is only tangentially about immigration. - The major problem, first of all, is that the economy of Mexico has failed such that many of its citizens feel the best alternative is to escape from it.
- The second problem is that previous administrations and legislators have allowed 11-12 million economic refugees to escape into the United States doing little to resolve it. George W. Bush didn't cause the problem, but he has been the only President strong enough to demand the issue be addressed.
- The third problem is to throttle back the sieve that is our southern border such that immigration becomes a safe, orderly legal process.
- The fourth problem is how to time stamp 11-12 million refugees so that they could be registered for future legal immigration along with others already in line without those refugees feeling threatened that merely by registering they will expose themselves to a dragnet gathering them for deportation.
Steps forward
- Manage the border.
- Work with Mexico to develop its own economy.
- Differentiate between those who want to work temporarily and those who wish to become citizens.
- Time in country is not a suitable criterion for determining who should be allowed permanent citizenship and who should not. Criteria should include citizenship, economic self-sufficiency, assimilation into the society (language), and willingness to stand in line with others who are applying for citizenship. A lottery can be held each year for a portion of those who join the immigration line as guest workers already in the United States so a manageable number can be interleaved with other legal immigrants.
- Business should not be required to serve as law enforcement agents and to attempt to penalize businesses for failing to do so is improper and unwarranted.
- For citizenship, assimilation is important, while allowing them to otherwise preserve their culture and heritage. That requires learning English as a second language along with mastering the core principles of our society.
