Presuming to channel God
One shouldn't say that "Surely God is mad at those who presume to channel God." because to do so would be to commit the same kind of idolotry of such fools as these. Two weeks into the new year and already it has been a banner year for foot-in-mouth disease.
First Pat Robertson -- Robertson suggests God smote Sharon: Television evangelist Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, which Robertson opposed. And then New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin -- New Orleans Mayor Says God Mad at U.S.:Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.
"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day. Whether God really is mad or not, one should not presume to say, but directed by God or independent of Him, scorn and ridicule should be heaped on Robertson, Nagin, and others of that sort in retribution for such ill-considered and presumptious remarks.
Are such people as these simply misguided or are they lying? No matter. In the search for progress, paddling one's canoe in circles is disqualifying. Society must move forward without them. The only question unanswered is how to compassionately help those who still listen to such claptrap.
