Cheer on the votes
People in our country enjoy the luxury of an insulation that allows them to concentrate on peripheral interests. Gossip columnists and fake reality shows are peripheral. Much of what is bandied about by pundits and network television news shows is peripheral. Sunday's Iraqi vote is not.
Sunday, millions of Iraqis are going to take the first step central to establishing a process to assure their stable, peaceful future -- and a more stable future for other democracies, too. Whatever posturing takes place around the Iraqi election, it is an event that you made possible.
Clear away all the noise that has encumbered the issue since U.N. Resolution 1441 was first passed and all that remains is the stark question, "Do you want to throw your support behind forces who want control purely for the sake of their own personal power, or do you support those fighting to establish a functional process of government?"
War is ugly. War is not desirable. But, in your comfort and insulation, remember that for once in the longest time, millions of Iraqi citizens get to make a choice. Every single vote is a victory.
Yes. The Iraqi election is about you -- about how clearly you think about world issues. Every atrocity designed to drive coalition forces out of Iraq dares you to look in the mirror. Have you the guts to face down tyranny trying to drive you away? Screw your courage to the sticking point (as Shakespeare wrote) and let's cheer on the votes.
