This is actually my Mother-in-law Flo's recipe, but years from now I will have delivered it to so many holiday events and family gatherings that maybe they may become known as my cookies instead of Flo's Christmas Cookies. And if it stay's Flo's cookies, that's okay because she was a neat lady.

It's modified from a magazine article from the 1950s. Besides, she changed it a little.

Utensils:

  • 1 large bowl
  • 1 ungreased cookie sheet (a silicone mat is nice)
  • 1 rolling pin (works best with a knit sleeve)
  • 1 cotton pie rolling mat (optional)
  • 1 electric beater
  • 2 ordinary wood pencils
  • 1 scraper
  • 1 set of cookie cutters

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups soft butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 5 cups flour

Instructions:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar with the electric beater in the large bowl.
  3. Add eggs and beat until fluffy.
  4. Slowly add salt, flour and milk and continue to beat until well mixed.
  5. Spread extra flour on the mat and rolling pin to stop dough from sticking.
  6. Place the pencils parallel on the mat slightly closer than the ends of the rolling pin. When the rolling pin is rolled over the pencils with the dough between them, the dough will be rolled uniformly about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Place a ball of dough between the pencils and roll it out.
  8. Press the cookie cutters into the rolled dough and place the cookies about a half inch apart on the cookie sheet.
  9. Depending on the oven, bake the cookies for 8-12 minutes.
  10. When done, let the cookies cool for five minutes and then lift to a sheet of aluminum foil to reuse the cookie sheet.
  11. When cool, frost with Flo's famous cream cheese frosting.

The recipe makes 50 to 75 cookies, depending on the cookie cutters and the thickness of your cookies.

Flo's famous cream cheese frosting

Utensils:

  • 1 medium bowl
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 electric beater
  • 1 spatula for each color frosting

Ingredients:

  • 6 tablespoons soft butter
  • 3 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 lb confectioner's sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
  • food coloring
  • colored sugar cake decorations

Instructions:

  1. If you're smart, you'll double the frosting recipe!
  2. Whip the butter, cream cheese, and vanilla until soft and well mixed.
  3. Slowly beat in the confectioner's sugar, adding just enough milk as necessary to assure the proper consistency for spreading.
  4. Divide up the frosting in small bowls, add food coloring, and stir in.
  5. Set the kids loose frosting and decorating cookies.
  6. Remember, every kid-decorated cookie looks wonderful.
  7. Be sure to leave enough frosting to spoon out as a snack.
