Oppose the flag amendment
A new Constitutional Amendment has been proposed:
Congress shall have the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.
It just won't work. Why are normally clever politicians flocking to support it? Do they believe that bad law is better than appearing unˆAmerican?
Here are some examples why it won't work: Must the flag be cloth? How about a paper copy? How about a photograph? What if part of the flag is hidden and one can't determine that whether it is a flag in it's entirety? What if someone, specifically for symbolic desecration, markets a pseudoˆflag minus one star or with a tiny tag sewn on it that says „This is not a flag"?
What if a writer's script calls for the actors to damage a flag within the story line? Is it desecration in a play? Is it desecration only when the play is performed? What if the actors use a 49ˆstar flag in the performance?
Most of us understand that the „flag" within the play is only a symbol, not the real flag. And further, that the flag is, itself, a symbol, not the real country.
Salute the American flag and you salute the people, the laws, and the principles that make up the country˜not the cloth. Burn the flag and out of the ashes rises a shining beacon to principles that make this country great.
In election year posturing, too many incumbents would sell your freedom for a vote. They'd mangle the Constitution in righteous indignation and paranoia.
Some three people in the whole country have burned flags in the last two years. Washington insiders would lay waste to hundreds of years of Constitutional tolerance to get three people? Reality check! Who have flagˆburners hurt? No one. Who would the politicians hurt to retaliate? Everyone.
When people desecrate the country, that's where we want the line drawn. When they burn the flag? Stand proud. Too many people died to give them the privilege.
