Adrift in a storm-tossed sea
Paralleling my own understanding, Wretchard writes:
We can have knowledge only if we renounce the demand to understand it all. And that is why, I think, blog authors who want solve murders, help children, tell a joke, fight the enemy -- are far better off than those who hanker after certainty
Philosophy ceased to be everyday useful when, because humanity was adrift in a sea of uncertainty, it tried to attach itself to the certainty of the sea floor and fell short. Real philosophy used to deal with the simple daily problems of living. That's why sensible people seek the more modest goal -- to lash our individual storm-tossed boats together into a society that helps stabilize all who are afloat. That's the same point Wretchard makes.
