Lies
Nothing ticks me off more than a lie. A lie cheats everyone -- the one who tells it, the one who hears it, the community at large. A lie is permanent. Its effect lasts forever.
A lie is the subtext of the Commandment, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." From the instant of the sin, the adulterer's thoughts must forevermore be edited lest the secret escape.
A lie has permanent consequences. Like an electrical fuse -- once trust burns out, it's done. Someone who lies can never be trusted again.
A lie makes trying to have as accurate a mental map of reality impossible. If people adjust their mental map of reality based on lies told, plans made using that map are warped.
Which brings me to the current campaign where Kerry says Bush lied about WMD, emphasizes that outsourcing primarily caused job loss, or that Bush is responsible for the huge deficit.
In "A Man for all Seasons" an underling perjures himself to win Attorney Generalship for Wales. Sir Thomas More comments, "Richard, it profits a man nothing to trade his soul for the whole world, but for Wales ...!"
I can understand why Kerry's mom said "Integrity. Integrity. Integrity."
I wonder how people can support someone who doesn't care enough to tell the truth. I wonder about reporters who don't know enough to recognize it. People overlook how important truth is.
