Austin Bay refers to a blog entry about metacognition at zenpundit. What follows is my comment.

Computer jocks call a program that calls itself "recursive". Look at an M.C. Escher graphic and you'll see it at work. We don't teach it in school, more's the pity. One can graduate, but one is not educated until one can think about thinking. It is the basis of ethics and the foundation upon which societies learn to relate squarely with each other.
So why don't we teach it?
