Heat Of Fusion Results
Over the past two weeks the students here at Rome Free Academy have been participating in what is known as Heat Of Fusion. HOF is a battle of the classes in sporting events like ping pong, dodgeball, floor hockey and football after school. Each class plays down until there is one team for each grade, then seniors will play sophomores and juniors play freshmen. Once down to two classes, the remaining teams play each other for first and second. The point system is as follows; first place, 100; second place, 75; third place 50; and fourth place 25. Not including the activities that were done during lunch periods, first place overall goes to the seniors with 1450 points, second overall were the juniors with 850 points, third went to the freshmen who racked up 700 points, and fourth were the sophomores with 650 points.

Key Off Season Signings in the AL East
By Ed Zakrzewski, Knight Times Staff member
So you sign C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira and you≠re a lock to win the A.L. East? Not so fast, you still have the incredible underdog story in the Tampa Bay Rays. They proved they were no joke last year and are here to stay and compete with the beasts of the east.
If you look at the off season moves in the A.L. East the Yankees had to do the best out of the three teams. They addressed there pitching needs by singing left hander C.C. Sabathia. Last year Sabathia posted a 17-10 record with a 2.70 era and 251 strike outs. The Yankees also got right hander A.J. Burnett, last season Burnett had a 18-10 record, 4.07 era and 231 strike outs. They also addressed there need for a first baseman in singing Mark Teixeira.
If you look at the pitching rotations for the Sox≠s, Yanks, and Rays this year it is really competitive. The Sox≠s rotation consists of Daisuke Matsuzaka, Josh Beckett, John Lester, Tim Wakefield, Brad Penny, and starter-reliever John Smoltz. The Yanks starting rotation consist of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Pettitte, and Joba Chamberlin. The Rays rotation consists of James Shields, Scott Kazmir, Matt Garza, David Price, and Andy Sonnanstine. I would rank the three pitching staffs in this order; 1.Yanks 2.Rays and 3.Redsox.
Projected opening day lineup for the Sox≠s look like this, catcher: Jason Varitek 1st base: Kevin Youkillis 2nd base: Dustin Pedroia 3rd base: Mike Lowell Shortstop: Jed Lowrie Left Field: Jason Bay Center Field: Jacoby Ellsbury Right Field: J.D. Drew and DH: David Ortiz.
Projected Rays opening day line up looks like this, catcher: Dioner Navarro 1st base: Carlos Pena 2nd base: Akinori Iwamura 3rd base: Evan Longoria Shortstop: Jason Bartlett Left Field: Carl Crawford Center Field: B.J. Upton Right Field: Matt Joyce and DH: Pat Burrell.
Projected Yankees opening day lineup looks like this, catcher Jorge Posada 1st base: Mark Teixeira 2nd base: Robinson Cano 3rd base: Cody Ransom (Alex Rodriguez is out with hip surgery) Shortstop Derek Jeter Left Field: Xavier Nady Center Field: Melkey Cabrera Right Field: Johnny Damon and DH: Hideki Matsui.
The best catcher in the division is Dioner Navarro. With Posada and Varitek on the decline Navarro is one of the best young catchers coming up. The way he calls a game is absolutely amazing. Mark Teixeira is the best 1st baseman in the division. Dustin Pedroia is clearly the best 2nd baseman in the division; he is a consistent fielder and can hit the ball with the best of them. The best shortstop in the league is the captain of the Yanks Derek Jeter. For third base it has to be Evan Longoria for the Rays. Jason Bay and J.D. Drew for the Sox≠s are the best left fielder and right fielders. In center field it is B.J. Upton for the Rays, and DH David Ortiz for Boston.
My prediction for the division is 1.Yankees, 2.Rays, and 3. Redsox. A.J. Burnett will win the CY Young award and B.J. Upton will win the A.L. MVP. With all the talent the Yanks picked up in the offseason if they don≠t win the division this season it will be a failure. If they don≠t win the World Series it will also be a failure. The Yankees will beat Tampa Bay in a 4 game sweep to win the American League pennant, then the Yanks will beat the Chicago Cubs in 5 games to win there 27th World Series Title.

Rome Denied TVL RFA Appeals Decision
Along with Proctor High School, the Rome athletics were denied in their request to join the Tri- Valley League. Rome officials have decided to appeal the decision made my TVL officials. According to the Observer- Dispatch TVL superintendents and athletic directoprs believe the numbers just don't add up and thats ultimately the reason league officials denied the request. VVS School District Superintendent Norman Reed said that the decision had nothing to do with winning and losing, and that it didn't relate to whether Utica and Rome would dominate. Proctor and RFA were looking to enter the league to cut down costs of travel, but not all sports would enter. Football and Ice Hockey leagues are set up by section three and would remain with section three and all other sports would switch over to the TVL. The Tri- Valley League currently consists of Camden, Clinton, Holland Patent, New Hartford, Notre Dame, Oneida, VVS, and Whitesboro. Also according to the Observer- Dispatch Proctor and Rome were denied because their schools are just too big, and in a news release sent from Reed's office, officials feel that "the disproportionate enrollments from the largest school districts within the proposed league arrangement (Utica with 2,028 students and Rome with 1,276 students) and the smallest school districts (Holland Patent with 425 students and Clinton with 437 students) would be too large to ensure fair play and our athletes safety".
