Are you looking for a fun way to help your community? Do you want to make new friends? Or do you simply need a club to put on your college applications? Key Club is a great way to do all three of these things.
At its first meeting of the year on September 8, there was one question on the mind of almost every new member. What exactly IS Key Club? The official website describes it as "an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership." But what does that mean?
President Brandon Liddy explains it in layman's terms: "Basically, Key Club is a community service organization that teaches teens to put the welfare of others in front of themselves, and to give to those who desperately need help. We do service projects all year long, [and] these projects cumulate service hours and donations to organizations that would like the support."
Some of the service projects planned for the upcoming year include the Crop Walk and canned food drives. However, Liddy says that he has other out of the ordinary ideas planned to attract new members. One such idea is a Polar Dip, to benefit the Foundation to Fight Blindness. Members will receive pledges from various businesses and organizations, and the amount of money a member receives determines how far he or she must run into Lake Delta in the midst of winter.
"People should consider joining Key Club because we work with a lot of community service organizations that are run by adults, such as Kiwanis and the Alzheimer's association," says Liddy. "Also, not only do we do work for the community but we have a ton of fun doing it." Meetings are every Monday after school in the cafeteria and the advisor is Ms. Race. Freshmen and new members are always welcome and encouraged.
