On February 18 and 19, several members from Rome Free Academy‚s Junior ROTC participated in a cyber security competition in Florida. These students were seniors Rafhanah Pitkin, Sean Bird, Shawn Stanford and juniors captain Rafidah Pitkin, Lauren Bendall, Josh Pilgreen. Only the top three places were announced and RFA‚s Junior ROTC team was not in the top three, so they don‚t know where they placed.
In order to prepare for the competition, the students had to work very hard. During some practices, the students would work hard for over four hours with coaches Michael Weir and Steven Pitkin. In the end, the practice was well worth it. Out of 292 teams across the nation, RFA‚s cyber security team placed in the top eight.
There were no specific requirements to sign up to participate on the cyber security team. Students just had to sign up, many of them not having any computer background, and with hard work and dedication, they became one of the best cyber security teams in the nation.
The main focus of the competition was to get students interested in cyber defense so they could make a career out of it and help the nation‚s defend system become unstoppable. If students have an interest in computers or in anything like the cyber security team, they should sign up to participate.
„I would definitely recommend other students to take part in this magnificent competition, all you need is dedication and perseverance,‰ says senior Rafhanah Pitkin.
The Heat of Fusion Schedule for today includes volleyball, kanjam, and football. Good luck!
