Students interested in studying abroad for a year should consider the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. In order to be eligible for this program, the student cannot be older than 18 1/2 when they leave. The cost of the youth exchange program is $4,000. However, Rotary does offer scholarships.
Rotary is an International Organization, which places students in countries which also have a Rotary Program. Students applying for the program choose five different countries they would like to visit, and then Rotary chooses one of the five.
The application process begins with filling out an application online at www.rotarydistrict7150youthexchange.org. The online application, which includes an essay, must be completed by Wednesday, October 15. After the application is completed, Mr. and Mrs. Neiley interview the student and his or her family. After the interview, the student≠s application goes to the Rotary committee. If the student is accepted, they must attend a half-day interview session. The interviews are held to see if the student is capable of handling themselves in tough situations, and if they are sincere about wanting to go. If the student is accepted after the interview session, they must then attend several training weekends before they are considered ready to go abroad.
While in a foreign country, the student spends his or her year with three different host families. This allows the student to get different perspectives of the country they visit. In addition, students do not receive credits while studying abroad. However, the youth exchange program has numerous benefits. Students often mature after spending a year abroad. The Rotary District 7150 sends over 40 students each year. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Neiley at mneiley@romecsd.org.
