After 32 years of teaching, Mrs. Rizzo is ready for retirement. Retirement is fast approaching, so she shared some special insight. Her favorite memories are her trips to Costa Rica with some of her students and her tole painting club at the middle school.
The things Mrs. Rizzo will miss most when she retires at the end of this year are the faculty and the students, especially their senses of humor.

She also had some special advice for new teachers.
"Have patience and a good sense of humor," she said.
When retirement comes about at the end of this year, Mrs. Rizzo plans to see her grandson, relax, read, and do some volunteer work. We wish you the best, Mrs. Rizzo!

Social Action Corps hosted Sudanese refugee Gabriel Bol Deng last week on Thursday, May 20. Bol Deng is one of about 4000 "Lost Boys of Sudan," a group of Sudanese orphans who have been brought into the United States. He is seeking funds for a school in his native Sudan and working to raise awareness of the difficulties in the country. Bol Deng delivered a message about the power of hope and perseverance.
"If you have hope, you can move mountains."
Gabriel Bol Deng's dream is to establish a school in his native Sudan. His Hope for Ariang project has succeeded in constructing four classrooms and a clean-water well; he is now working on an office, and raising donations for a roof. Bol Deng believes that education is absolutely essential, especially for girls in countries such as his. He credits education as being a key component of his success, and hopes that RFA's students will use their high school education to move their own mountains. The philosophy of the Lost Boys is "Education is my mother and my father."
Bol Deng was orphaned at the age of ten, when Northern militia attacked and destroyed his village, killing many people. He recalls that one day, while tending his family≠s cattle, he heard gunshots and saw four militiamen approaching. He hid, and then escaped from his burning village; he was picked up by a band of other refugees after a few days, and the group travelled across desert for 8 weeks, and then crossed the Nile river to reach Dimma, a refugee camp in Ethiopia. Many of Bol Deng's companions died on this journey, either by dehydration and exhaustion, or crocodile attacks; at one point, a close friend of his took a nap, but when Bol Deng tried to awaken him, he found him dead in his sleep. He finally reached Dimma, and stayed there until relocating to Kenya in 1991; in 2001 Bol Deng was able to travel to America. He attended Onondaga College and became particularly interested in Shakespeare.
"To do something or wish to do something; the choice is absolutely up to you!"
Hope is an essential part of Bol Deng's life. It motivates and inspires him, and helped him to stay alive despite the challenges he faced. He believes that optimism can be of great value; his formula is "positive attitudes + hard work = success!" He places faith in people to work hard and rise to the challenges ahead, and feels that anyone, but especially younger people, can make a difference. His message was one of hope and encouragement; junior Jessica Augello said one of the lessons in his story was that "life is a gift, and its up to you to make the best of it."
The Lost Boys of Sudan, though no longer "boys," were orphaned or displaced during Sudan's civil war, which lasted until the United States brokered a peace between the North and South in 2005. Approximately 4000 Lost Boys, although this figure also includes a small number of girls, have been brought to the United States; the largest population of Lost Boys resides in Syracuse.
Gabriel Bol Deng's project, Hope for Ariang, is still receiving donations. For those interested in learning more about the project, information can be found at www.HopeForAriang.org.
The organization can also be reached at Hope for Ariang Foundation, inc. P.O. Box 6887, Syracuse NY, 13217, (315)-445-4292. Those interested can also help by educating others about Sudan≠s problems. Bol Deng emphasized, however, that it was not just Sudan that needed help; to truly help, it is not necessary to go to Sudan when a next-door neighbor may need help as well.
"Find an opportunity."

Ms. Lindsey, an excellent and devoted math teacher at Rome Free Academy, is ending her journey after 33 years of teaching. Ms. Lindsey proudly states the most she will miss about teaching is the students from previous years and those students telling her what is happening in their lives. Being selected "all-around teacher" at Strough was her favorite memory from her teaching career. After she retires Ms. Lindsey is moving to Florida! The advice Ms. Lindsey gives to new teachers is, "Get to know your students as people and make sure they know that you like them."

Physical education teacher Mrs. Grasso decides to retire after coaching for 34 years. Her favorite memories include coaching the girls cross country and modified track teams, and watching each runner mature and grow as they headed to varsity. She also enjoyed working with the staff at RFA. The thing she will miss most about teaching will be the students. "I really enjoy the relationship with most students," she says. Next year, Coach Grasso plans to work on cleaning her house. Her advice to new teachers would be to have lots of patience, and to be a good role model.

Several RFA STASS members have recently returned from a trip to Baltimore that was chock full of fun activities. The group departed Rome early on; 5 am on Thursday, April 28 to be precise. Upon their arrival, students and teachers toured the National Aquarium, which is the home of a plethora of exciting sea creatures including jellyfish, dolphins, and sharks. The aquarium also offers a unique rainforest exhibit.
After their aquarium visit, the group set off to explore the Inner Harbor, a hot spot in Baltimore. Students were able to visit an abundance of shops and witness the culture of the area. Some students even met A-rod in a restaurant!
After staying in Inner Harbor, STASS finally traveled to their hotel to rest. However, the rest period did not last long; the group was to depart for a dinner dance cruise on the Patapsco River. At dusk, everyone boarded the Spirit of Baltimore and took off for an enjoyable evening of fine dining and dancing.

The following morning, the group traveled to Fort McHenry. Fort McHenry is not only a historical landmark, but it is also the birthplace of our country's national anthem. "The Star Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 after a victory at Fort McHenry. The students and teachers learned about the history of the fort in a brief presentation and then were able to venture into the fort on their own.
After the fort visit, STASS took a trip to the Maryland Zoo, located in Baltimore. The zoo had a vast variety of animals. The animals came from all over the world; ranging from African camels to Antarctic polar bears. Students were also able to experience giraffe feeding, an activity most usually don't normally encounter.
The group returned to the Inner Harbor for some food and good ol' rock 'n' roll at the Hard Rock Cafe. After the meal, however, all were eager to depart because their next stop was the Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Redsox game at Camden Yards.
The game had STASS sitting (unless they were already standing out of excitement) on the edge of their seats; it was tied up until the bottom of the tenth inning. Ultimately Baltimore took the win however, defeating the Red Sox 5-4.
On their final day of the trip, STASS set out for Six Flags America. Much of the group faced fear head on by riding Superman: Ride of Steel. Those brave enough to ride traveled high into the air, only to be welcomed to a 300 ft. drop. Those who opted out of roller coasters still enjoyed the other attractions the park had to offer.
The group returned home after their eventful journey late Saturday evening.

Behavior was outstanding when Arcuri, congressional representative for the 24th district, spoke to seniors on Monday.
Health care was the first topic discussed. Arcuri voted no on the bill. "It didn't bring cost down...[it] had a couple of ways paying for it I didn't like," says Arcuri. "[It] taxes the wealthiest Americans, [and there is a] provision in the bill [on] how much we give doctors...the bill reduced how much...[and we] are losing doctors. That's why I had to vote no."
This area is the home of Revere Copper and Brass, which has been serving this area for decades. Because Copper has recently been found to be antimicrobial, hospitals will eventually convert surfaces from stainless steal to copper in hopes of reducing hospital born illnesses. Demand for copper would increase jobs at places like Revere, which is good news for the area.
Arcuri, who is a part of the transportation committee, plans to lobby for high speed rail that would connect Chicago, New York City, and Washington D.C. the rail would pass through the Mohawk Valley, which in turn would create job growth in the area.
Although there are things the government can do to help increase jobs, Arcuri says, "really, it is the private sector that creates jobs."
Government spending has been an issue in Washington. Arcuri is working to fix that in his own office. Arcuri managed to cut 8% of his offices expenses. He is now trying to get other congressman to do the same with the Belt Tightening Act. The act would call for each office to cut spending by 5%, this is insignificant to the 13 trillion dollar deficit the country is in, but it could be the start of progress.
The young voter demographic has the lowest voter turn out. Candidates can disregard issues that are important for that group, and still hold office. Arcuri showed that he cares about this often left-out group.
"I need to be saying what is important to you," says Arcuri "I need to listen"

Seventeen RFA students along with Mrs. Zeller and Mrs. Melone, two of RFA's business teachers, took a trip to Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. The visitors first sat through an information session about SU, including information about admission, requirements, and their different schools within the University. They had then taken a campus walking tour, which led them to Whitman, in which a presentation and a tour was awaiting them. The free goodies and pizza at Varsity's, located on the hill, weren't the only reasons for visiting. "I don't think the students get enough exposure to bigger colleges," stated Mrs. Zeller, who also appreciates the opportunities that come along with bigger schools, whether it's the chance to travel or the exposure that's available for the students.

Nick Brement, a States level diver and Sectionals swimmer, received the prestigious "Black R," the highest athletic honor offered by RFA. Brement has been swimming and diving for 5 years, and has qualified for States for the past 3 years, placing second for the past two. He is also the Valedictorian of the Senior Class, with a weighted average of 102.99.
The Black R is the greatest award given to RFA athletes, and is meant only for the very best; a Black R need not be awarded every season, and is meant to be given to only one boy and one girl. It is awarded only to seniors, and is described as "elite." To receive the award, an athlete must be nominated by a coach, who then has to write a recommendation that will be reviewed by a committee of coaches. The criteria for the award are: athletic ability, leadership, sportsmanship, attitude, coachability, and achievements. The decision to award the Black R must be unanimous. Brement was nominated for the award by swim coach Michelle Moore.
Brement was awarded the Black R for his success in diving. This year he broke the pool record for 6 dives with a score of 281.20, placed second in Sectionals with a score of 401.50, and competed at States. He began diving in seventh grade, under Coach Prosser. He also excels as a swimmer; at Sectionals this year, Brement's 200 Freestyle Relay team, consisting of himself, Randy Pawlikowski, Aidan Slagle and Adam Noyes, placed seventh with a time of 1:36.62. He was also a part of the 400 Freestyle Relay team consisting of himself, Aidan Slagle, Chris Debany, and Adam Noyes, which placed eighth with a time of 3:42.19. Brement also plays football in the fall and baseball in the spring, and is a scholar-athlete.
Besides his athletic accomplishments, Brement is also an outstanding student. He is the top of his class, captain of the Mathletics team, and a trumpet player. Brement takes college courses at MVCC, where he gets firsthand experience. He will be attending Princeton University to study Pre-Med in the fall.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be forcefully removed from your home, country, and life as you currently knew? Gabriel Bol Deng does. Pepperoni pizza, chicken tenders, ribs, ham subs, and tacos... All processed meat. At RFA, the number of vegetarian options is next to nothing, and what might have been "healthy" options are replaced by Pop Tarts and potato chips.
With more and more students learning of humanitarianism and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) they have also embraced the concept of vegetarianism. Unfortunately, these students often go hungry during lunchtime due to the lack of non-meat options presented to them.
Some would argue that there are sides of vegetables like string beans, corn, and fries, but in most cases the main course is still meat. $1.65 wasted for half a morsel of decent food.
With an order of plain pizza, fries, and mozzarella sticks, it's still hardly a vegetarian meal. Most of the foods are fried in the same oils as the meats, so there is still that lingering feeling of meat while eating. Even if your account is overcharged and you are offered a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, which also provides hardly any nutritional value within it.
By law, schools are required to provide an adequate mid-day meal for their students. However, it says nothing about alternate diet preferences. Logically, any vegetable would be an excellent main course because of the myriad of vitamins and nutrients that promote healthy brain and body development for teens. All the buffalo chicken and fries are just making us fat.

Members of the Peer Leader group at RFA have been busy collecting donated prom dresses so that girls who would not able to attend due to financial reasons can now go feeling confident. The Rome community has been generous in sending dresses, jewelry, pocketbooks, wraps, and shoes.
So far about 200 dresses have been donated and they are now being stored at RFA. You can send your dresses and prom apparel to RFA or Jet Cleaners in Rome who is also contributing by cleaning the dresses. This opportunity lets girls choose a dress of their liking. Items are free, although a small donation is welcome.
Students needing a dress can sign up and make an appointment with Mrs. Cashion; dresses will be shown on Friday after school in room 1234.
When asked about the reason behind this idea, Mrs. Cashion says, „everyone should be able to have a special night."

On February 18 and 19, several members from Rome Free Academy‚s Junior ROTC participated in a cyber security competition in Florida. These students were seniors Rafhanah Pitkin, Sean Bird, Shawn Stanford and juniors captain Rafidah Pitkin, Lauren Bendall, Josh Pilgreen. Only the top three places were announced and RFA‚s Junior ROTC team was not in the top three, so they don‚t know where they placed.
In order to prepare for the competition, the students had to work very hard. During some practices, the students would work hard for over four hours with coaches Michael Weir and Steven Pitkin. In the end, the practice was well worth it. Out of 292 teams across the nation, RFA‚s cyber security team placed in the top eight.
There were no specific requirements to sign up to participate on the cyber security team. Students just had to sign up, many of them not having any computer background, and with hard work and dedication, they became one of the best cyber security teams in the nation.
The main focus of the competition was to get students interested in cyber defense so they could make a career out of it and help the nation‚s defend system become unstoppable. If students have an interest in computers or in anything like the cyber security team, they should sign up to participate.
„I would definitely recommend other students to take part in this magnificent competition, all you need is dedication and perseverance,‰ says senior Rafhanah Pitkin.
The Heat of Fusion Schedule for today includes volleyball, kanjam, and football. Good luck!

Austin Welch, a young freshman student at RFA was given the opportunity to be the Rome Free Academy Varsity manager and being able to play in a JV game and make a two-point basket. He was put into the game at the last few minutes.
After trying out for the team, the head coach decided to put him as the Varsity manager to help the team out for their season. Austin has been attending the practices and the home and away games just like the regular kids put on the teams and helped by being a supporter for them. He has been participating in his role and has helped the basketball program with his presence.
"He was our manager for the team and he seemed to enjoy his role,"said RFA sophmore Llyod Parkmond.
"I encouraged him to tryout for the team" said RFA sophmore Brandon Gullo.
With all his help and commitment to the RFA basketball program this year the team was able to do well and work together with the support of their Freshman manager for the season. Austin enjoyed his role on the team given to him and the players noticed. He showed dedication and enjoyment for the time he played in the JV game and the basket that he made.
Also, today is the career fair at RFA. Juniors will get a chance to visit with representatives from various occupations in order to gain some insight on their future. Students will be called down alphabetically, so pay attention for your name!

It's crunch time on that big project that you have been working on for so long. You figure that during one of your study halls, you can get some work done because right after school, you have no free time. Then you see a gray screen pop up with the letters YOUR ACCESS HAS BEEN DENIED. You think, it doesn't make sense that the school is blocking you for a history project on communism, or a health project on drugs.
Thirty-six percent of seniors surveyed said they have been blocked very often in their duration at RFA. Every student must take health for graduation, and a part of the course is a project. Many students have commented that they have been blocked trying to complete said project. Teachers take class time to allow students to research various project when more likely than not a student will be blocked. It isn't only health that has this problem; history and English courses do too. Students have been blocked looking up information on authors, like Langston Hughes, and current events for government or economics. As students we have been asked to be aware of issues in the world, past and present, but access to sites with this information is being blocked.
The people who decide on what is considered bad for students, is BOCES, which makes reasonable sense. What doesn't make sense is the filter, which checks to make sure what students are looking up is for educational purposes. If you're researching a topic that has to word "game" in it, good luck trying to find a website that isn't blocked by the filter.
One teacher that has strong feelings on this subject is Government and Economics teacher, Ms. Byrne. She feels that since we live in a world where the Internet is very important, students should be able to be taught with the showing of videos found on websites, such as youtube. With resources like the Internet available, it would be a shame for them not to be used. One resource that can aid a student, are blogs, students can contact experts in the field they are studying to help add depth and accuracy to their paper. Blogs, however, are currently blocked.
With the Internet filters, the students at RFA don't have as many opportunities to learn," Ms. Byrne says. One of the main complaints by teacher is that is takes too long for a request to unblock a website to be granted. Currently, it takes up to two weeks, to unblock a site.
Some kind of filter will always exist, but what it blocks, or even how it blocks can be changed. The district is obligated, by the Children's Internet Protection Act, to have a filter in order to receive a special rate for the internet service. The act loosely defines the parameters of an adequate filter. In essence, anything deemed harmful to minors by the district should be blocked.
Since RFA is a public school, it makes sense to have filters. There are minors who attend this school and the district has to protect the minors from any harm. However, RCS, a school also in Rome, does not have filters. There are more minors there than at RFA. The parents at RCS pay to have their children attend RCS, and they don't receive federal funding, so they don't need to abide by the act.

Until Friday evening it had been 15 years since an RFA hockey team had beaten longtime rival Clinton at home. The Black Knights defeated the Warriors by a 5-1 margin. Sophomore Garrett Reilley got the team off to a great start as he received a pass from junior Max Bartell 17 seconds into the game to take the lead to a 1-0. In between the pipes senior goalie Mike Endres made 27 saves allowing only one goal for Clinton early in the first period. Bartell then changed the game as he snapped in a wrist shot with 4:02 left in the first period to end the first period with RFA leading 2-1.
In the begining of the second period Reilley did it again. Off of another shot by Bartell, Reilley redirected it into the net with only 18 seconds into the period, giving the Black Knights a 3-1 lead. After Clinton called a timeout they decided to pull the goalie for an extra player in their offensive zone face off. Junior TJ Reilley won the face off to Bartell who then scored his second goal of the game, 16 of the season, on an open net. Then with 1:52 left in the game sophomore Eric Joyce sealed the deal with a goal closing the game 5-1. The Black Knights next game is scheduled for Tuesday evening as they travel to play the Westmoreland Bulldogs.

Colonel Ian Sanderson, a retiree from the Eastern Air Defense Sector at Griffis Air Force base, has recently taken over the position of JROTC Senior Instructor at RFA.
A 20-year veteran of the US Air Force and Air National Guard, Col. Sanderson has always found the military life challenging and fulfilling.
"To me there was no difference [between them]," Sanderson said. "Same rules, same uniform, same responsibilities. To me, it was the same as active duty."
Col. Sanderson admits that when he took the job as Senior Instructor, he wasn't sure that he knew what he was getting into.
"I had heard about the graduation ceremonies that JROTC put on, and I, as a military officer, thought it was an important part of our community. I knew Sergeant Pray, and about 3 or 4 years ago I started attending some of [the JROTC] functions."
Col. Sanderson is taking over for Col. Weiners, who built the program up from the ground when the new RFA was first built.
"Col. Weiners is a legend with very difficult shoes to fill. He was absolutely the right guy to build this program. He did such a magnificent job [founding it], and I wouldn't have liked to do that. He got the plane off the ground; I'm just trying to keep it in the air. I'm going to use him as my mentor."
Col. Sanderson's priority will be to completely understand how the program works, so that he might be able to manage and lead the cadets more efficiently. Not until he completely understands the program does he expect to make any major changes.
"[In the summer] I'll still be learning; but at least I get a few days to think back at what I've learned so far."
Sanderson is the father of 2 daughters that are RFA graduates, one of whom spent a year in the new building. He had seen parts of the building before, but had never really gotten the opportunity to become part of its community like he has now.
"All the staff that I've met here in the week and a half has been great! I≠m incredibly impressed by the entire school and the staff!"
Col. Sanderson was, in particular, impressed by the pride of the JROTC cadets, and would like all students in the building to know that he is here to "help students recognize their own potential."
Sanderson is confident that with the combined efforts of Pray and himself, everything that they bring to the table will be able to keep the program running smoothly.
"I'm excited to be working with the students. and with Sergeant Pray. [We're going] to try to make it interesting for everyone!"

The name Seventeen Come Sunday might not sound familiar now but in the future it may. The band, from Cicero-North Syracuse High School, participated in Juniorpalooza, a battle of the bands, located at the Palace Theatre in Syracuse. Creating a website can be hard, but creating an application can be downright frustrating.
Despite the difficulties, senior Joe Pasqualetti has worked hard since July on creating an app that will aid both doctors and medical students in diagnosing diseases through ultrasounds.
The app is designed to log different examples of ultrasounds with a description, "like a reference book," says Pasqualetti.
Pasqualetti is completing the app through an internship with Ideogenic Osmoles, which has published other medical based apps for the iPhone. In collaboration with the internship Pasqualetti is enrolled in an independent study with Ms. Lindsay.
"When I first started I had pretty much no idea what I was doing," says Pasqualetti. "I had to go through all the books and study like crazy. I was bringing the books everywhere and reading them in all my downtime; then I figured out how it was modeled and I finally got it."
Learning code is like learning another language, which there are so many different languages to choose from finding the best one can be difficult. This was the first hurdle Pasqualetti had to jump. "Sometimes with code you want to bang your head against the wall, literally not figuratively," says Pasqualetti. "There are many many variables. If you think to a science project there is never a controlled experiment."
Making an app isn't cheap there is a $100 annual fee and Apple takes 30% of the profits. Also the apple program for creating the app must be used. The price of the app will be approximately fifteen dollars; Ideogenic Osmoles controls the pricing.
Pasqualetti plans to have a full plate come college with a major in software engineering, a minor in web development and some classes in graphic design.
In an industry that is all about learn as you go, college can only teach the basics because of an abundance of computer languages. Pasqualetti is getting ahead of the game by learning as much as he can at RFA before going to college.

It is clearly stated in the code of conduct: "Hemlines of shorts, dresses, skirts, skorts shall be no shorter than mid-thigh."
With this being known, RFA cheerleaders break the rules everyone else must abide by. According to Mr. Benson, "the code of conduct is very clear and it's true that the uniforms violate it, but also stated" I'm torn between the spirit and the code of conduct.
Students are asked regularly to change their clothes because their shorts are too short, or their skirt doesn't quite cut it, but not once has a cheerleader been told that what they're wearing is inappropriate.
Administration's stance being, it's a school uniform, would not do justice if our swim team decided to wear their Speedos to school before a big meet. They wear them in the pool area, the obvious place they'd be accepted, whereas the sideline of a football or basketball game is where the cheerleading uniform would be accepted. There is a difference between the sidelines and school halls.
Surely there is a problem when some cheerleaders believe the uniforms are unsuitable, and therefore wear the supplied pants to school instead of the skirts. It is silly for the girls to even have an option between something that violates the code of conduct and something that doesn't.
The fact that it is a school uniform should not be reason enough to favor some students and allow the code of conduct to be broken.
The choice to wear the skirts during school hours should be removed because it is unfair to the other students that do accept and follow the code of conduct.
